SOUTHPOLE
LEADERSHIP IN PLASTIC WASTE REDUCTION
This award is bestowed upon South Pole for its outstanding implementation of the Taka Taka Recycling project in Kenya. This accolade specifically recognises its leadership in innovative plastic waste management, aligning with criteria that prioritise technical expertise, operational efficiency, and a steadfast commitment to transparent and verifiable practices.
The Taka Taka Recycling project directly addresses the escalating problem of plastic pollution in Kenya by developing a fully integrated plastic recycling value chain. South Pole has successfully diverted an impressive 25,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste annually from landfills and the natural environment, marking a significant impact that directly promotes pollution reduction. Furthermore, the project ingeniously transforms this recovered waste into valuable, high-quality plastic flakes (PET, HDPE, PP), which are then reintroduced into the manufacturing industry, thereby actively fostering circularity within the economy.
A particularly unique and commendable aspect of this initiative is the inclusion and formalisation of 4,000 informal waste pickers. This provides them with dignified employment, fair wages, essential safety equipment, health insurance, and comprehensive training. This not only profoundly improves local livelihoods but also secures a consistent and ethically sourced waste supply base for the recycling operation.
This award celebrates South Pole's exceptional ability to tackle a critical environmental challenge with a comprehensive solution that generates tangible climate benefits and substantial social co-benefits. It positions South Pole as a definitive benchmark in the global transformation of plastic waste management.
