This award recognises a Canadian startup that, in June 2025, issued the world’s first independently verified carbon credits from ocean alkalinity enhancement, a marine carbon dioxide removal pathway with the potential to store CO₂ for tens of thousands of years. The 625 credits, generated at its Halifax site in partnership with Dalhousie University, were independently certified under Isometric’s industry‑first OAE protocol and purchased by Stripe, Shopify and British Airways.

By turning a previously unproven laboratory concept into a verified, bankable carbon asset, Planetary demonstrated that marine CDR can be measured rigorously and deployed responsibly at scale. Beyond the credit issuance, Planetary continued to lead the sector’s expansion. In September 2025, the startup secured a US$31.3 million offtake agreement with Frontier — the largest OAE deal in history — to remove 115,211 tonnes of CO₂ between 2026 and 2030, with backing from Google, McKinsey and other coalition members. Its Tufts Cove facility processed nearly 4,000 tonnes of magnesium hydroxide, while a 45% reduction in time‑to‑credit set a new efficiency benchmark for verification.

By advancing scientific rigour, transparent MRV and community engagement, Planetary has proved that ocean‑based carbon removal is not a distant promise but an operational climate solution, ready to scale. For turning ocean alkalinity enhancement into a commercially viable and rigorously verified pathway, Planetary Technologies receives this recognition.
