Ørsted
Leadership in Renewable Utilities
This award recognises Ørsted for becoming the first energy company in the world to complete a full green transformation from fossil fuels to renewable energy. In November 2025, as global leaders gathered for COP30 in Brazil, Ørsted announced it had met its sector-leading, science‑based 2025 decarbonisation target by reducing its scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 98 % compared to 2006, bringing its emissions intensity down to just 4 g CO₂e/kWh. Renewable energy now accounts for 99 % of the company’s energy production, and Ørsted has built 18.5 GW of renewable capacity – 10.2 GW of offshore wind plus 8.1 GW under construction.
The milestone was achieved through a combination of deploying offshore wind, closing all coal‑fired power plants, divesting oil and gas activities, electrifying its vehicle fleet and covering its own electricity use with renewable certificates.
By closing its last coal‑fired power station in 2024 and completing its green transformation in 2025, Ørsted has proven that a utility can decarbonise at scale without compromising business performance. Its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)‑validated net‑zero goal for 2040 now extends to the full value chain, including upstream and downstream emissions from steel, copper and maritime fuels. For demonstrating that a fossil‑intensive utility can become a renewable energy leader and for setting a verifiable benchmark for the sector, Ørsted receives this recognition.
