EMSTEEL Group

Leadership in Steel & Cement Decarbonisation

This award recognises EMSTEEL Group for embedding quantifiable decarbonisation targets into one of the world’s hardest-to-abate industrial sectors. In February 2025, the company unveiled a comprehensive strategy to cut absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 40 % in its steel business and 30 % in its cement business by 2030 (using a 2019 baseline), on a credible path to net zero by 2050. The plan rests on three pillars: energy efficiency and advanced process optimisation, alternative fuels and raw materials, and a rapid transition to clean electricity. With 86 % of its power already drawn from nuclear and solar sources, EMSTEEL aims to reach 100 % clean electricity by 2030, directly cutting Scope 2 emissions.

Its carbon intensity of just 0.67 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of steel is already well below the global average, and the company has reduced total Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 23 % since 2019. Beyond internal targets, EMSTEEL turned ambition into tangible action. In August 2025, it delivered the MENA region’s first hydrogen‑based rebar – produced using green hydrogen from a pilot project co‑developed with Masdar – for the construction of Abu Dhabi’s first net‑zero carbon mosque, enabling the building to achieve LEED Zero Carbon certification. In September 2025, the company launched TrueGreen™, a sustainability identity that consolidates all its low‑carbon steel solutions and supports the UAE’s NDC 3.0 requirement of a 79 % reduction in built environment emissions by 2035. For turning a science‑based roadmap into verifiable industrial decarbonisation and for leading the regional transition to green steel, EMSTEEL Group receives this recognition.
