Ma'aden
Leadership in Renewable-Powered Mining
This award recognises Ma'aden for delivering the Gulf region's first fully off-grid, solar-plus-storage power solution for a remote mining asset. In 2025, Ma'aden Bauxite and Alumina Company signed a 30-year Power Purchase Agreement with Emerge — a joint venture of Masdar and EDF — to construct an 8 MWp solar PV array integrated with a 30 MWh battery energy storage system at the Al Baitha Bauxite Mine, generating approximately 17,300 MWh annually and avoiding around 13,800 tonnes of CO₂ per year. The design solves two structural barriers to mining decarbonisation simultaneously: solar intermittency (addressed by battery storage) and grid unavailability at remote locations (off-grid configuration). Ma'aden also captures 450,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ annually from its Ras Al-Khair ammonia units.
For delivering verifiable zero-carbon mining infrastructure at asset level, Ma'aden receives this recognition. The Ma'aden Baitha project provides a replicable blueprint for a structural challenge facing mining decarbonisation globally: how to power remote assets reliably without grid access while eliminating diesel dependency. The off-grid solar-plus-storage architecture — de-risked by a 30-year PPA — demonstrates that the financing and technology exist to decarbonise isolated industrial sites at competitive cost. Combined with its ammonia-unit CO₂ capture operations, Ma'aden is building a multi-vector emissions reduction strategy that sets a new standard for the extractive sector. For delivering that at asset level, Ma'aden receives this recognition.
