DSM-Firmenich
Leadership in Livestock Emissions Reduction
This award recognises DSM-Firmenich for delivering one of the most scalable tools available to cut enteric methane, the potent greenhouse gas emitted by livestock. Its feed additive Bovaer (3-NOP), requiring just a quarter-teaspoon per cow per day, reduces methane emissions by around 30% in dairy cows and up to 45% in beef cattle, with effects beginning within 30 minutes of feeding.
Backed by more than 150 peer-reviewed studies and trials across some 20 countries and approved by regulators including the FDA, EFSA and the UK FSA, Bovaer reached, as of 2025, commercial availability in roughly 59 to 70 countries and had enabled the saving of more than 350,000 tonnes of CO2e to date.
By delivering Bovaer through standard feed systems and partnering with players such as Elanco for the US market, DSM-Firmenich has made methane reduction practical at the level of real farms rather than confined to the laboratory. Because over 100 countries have identified methane reduction as the single most effective near-term strategy to keep 1.5°C within reach, a feed additive that immediately and measurably cuts emissions from one of agriculture's hardest-to-abate sources is a structurally significant climate tool. For making enteric methane reduction commercially deployable at global scale, DSM-Firmenich receives this recognition.
