This award recognises Tesco for translating ambitious climate targets into measurable operational results across the UK's largest retail footprint. Its 2024/25 Sustainability Report, published in May 2025, confirmed that Tesco had already cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 65% from its baseline—exceeding its 2025 target ahead of schedule—through measures including the replacement of HFC refrigerants with recovered CO2 systems and the switch to renewable electricity across all group operations. To support this, Tesco signed the UK's largest corporate solar Power Purchase Agreement, securing 65% of output from the 373 MW Cleve Hill Solar Park.

As one of the first retailers globally to have net zero, science-based targets validated by the SBTi across its full value chain, Tesco aims for carbon neutrality in operations by 2035 and net zero by 2050, with interim targets to cut absolute Scope 3 emissions—which account for over 90% of its footprint—by 55% by 2032. Through its supplier engagement programmes, sustainable farming partnerships and Future of Farming work with British producers, Tesco is cascading decarbonisation across a supply chain dominated by emissions-intensive food production.
