LSE Grantham Research Institute

Leadership in Climate Economics

This award recognises a world-leading research institute for its dual role as a definitive source of climate legislation data and as a pre-eminent voice on the economics of the net‑zero transition. In 2025, Lord Nicholas Stern, Chair of the Institute, published The Growth Story of the 21st Century: The Economics and Opportunity of Climate Action, a landmark open‑access book that revisits the insights of his 2006 Stern Review two decades on. At the same time, the Institute’s Climate Change Laws of the World database tracked over 1,500 climate laws across 164 countries, including 75 climate framework laws in 69 nations, providing the empirical foundation for its research on how legislation drives accountability, target setting, and cross‑government action.

Beyond its legal database, the Grantham Research Institute remained a critical source of actionable policy analysis throughout 2025, producing reports on UK carbon dioxide removal leadership, climate resilience planning for London, and a global survey on integrating climate risk into finance ministries’ decisions. By combining rigorous economic analysis, open‑access data, and direct engagement with policymakers, the Institute has consistently bridged the gap between academic research and real‑world climate governance. For building the evidence base that makes decarbonisation both credible and investable, the LSE Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment receives this recognition.
