John Cockerill

This award recognises an electrolyser manufacturer that has consolidated European hydrogen production capacity at a critical moment. In July 2025, John Cockerill Hydrogen acquired the key assets of McPhy, including its Belfort gigafactory – one of the few European facilities with gigawatt-scale hydrogen manufacturing capacity. The acquisition safeguards a strategic industrial asset and accelerates the development of next-generation pressurised alkaline electrolysers, a cornerstone technology for decarbonising heavy industry.

By combining John Cockerill’s electrolysis cells with McPhy’s innovative components, the company aims to achieve a 10–15 per cent competitive advantage over current models, positioning electrolysis as a key technology for decarbonising heavy industry. For preserving and scaling Europe’s industrial capacity to produce green hydrogen, John Cockerill receives this recognition.
