AMERICAN AIRLINES
SHARED PATH TO NET-ZERO AVIATION
This award is bestowed upon American Airlines for its multifaceted and transparent strategy towards decarbonisation, positioning it as a leader in net emissions reduction within the challenging aviation sector. American Airlines has demonstrated a proactive and robust commitment by setting an ambitious net-zero target for 2050, complemented by an externally validated, science-based interim goal of a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity by 2035 (relative to a 2019 baseline), aligning with stringent global climate demands.
Its value proposition is particularly notable for empowering consumers to directly participate in climate action by offsetting the emissions from their flights through verified projects with Cool Effect, thereby fostering a shared environmental responsibility. Furthermore, American Airlines’ commitment is significantly reinforced by the extensive use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with agreements to purchase over 620 million gallons through 2030, contributing substantially towards its goal of replacing 10% of its jet fuel with SAF by 2030. The airline has also forged a strategic partnership with Graphyte, becoming its inaugural customer for atmospheric carbon removal via their innovative ""carbon casting"" process, commencing with an initial purchase of 10,000 tonnes of permanent carbon removal. This is coupled with the integral incorporation of renewable energy into its operations, having notably achieved its goal of sourcing 2.5 million gigajoules of cost-competitive renewable energy by 2023, two years ahead of schedule, with its Dallas-Fort Worth headquarters now entirely powered by renewables.
This potent combination of offsetting mechanisms, direct emissions reduction through fuel efficiency and SAF deployment, and cutting-edge carbon removal, all transparently communicated to consumers, profoundly validates the credibility of American Airlines’ sustainability claims. The company is not merely pursuing carbon neutrality; it is actively establishing a benchmark for how airlines can comprehensively engage their customers and strategically diversify their decarbonisation pathways, thereby paving an exemplary route for the entire industry.
